Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has drawn parallels between the Australia-India rivalry and the historic Ashes series, declaring that these encounters are some of the most eagerly awaited in world cricket. Ponting emphasized the intensity and significance of this rivalry, noting that it has built up over time and is now as much a spectacle as any in the sport.

Maintaining Competitive Spirit

Ponting has urged both teams to compete fiercely but fairly during the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy series. Speaking in a recent episode of the ICC Review, he said:

“Aussie-England, with the history of the Ashes, is a legendary rivalry, but Australia-India is not far behind. It’s a battle that has developed over a long period, and it’s one that everyone looks forward to.”

He further added, “As a former player and now as a commentator, I want to see both teams play hard but fair, and see who stands tall at the end of the five games.”

Anticipation Of Intense Battles

Ponting acknowledged the expected intensity and competitive nature of the series, stating:
“I expect these matches to be played on the edge, with two of the best teams in the world not willing to give an inch to each other.”

He highlighted the mental and physical pressure that comes with these high-stakes encounters, adding, “Neither team will want to lose a single contest throughout the series.”

The Global Significance Of The Rivalry

Ponting also discussed the broader importance of the Australia-India rivalry, noting that it has become one of the most significant in world sport. He said, “Australia-India in Test cricket is as big as any rivalry in world sport, not just in cricket.”

Schedule For The Border-Gavaskar Trophy

The highly anticipated series will begin on November 22 in Perth, with the second Test set to take place as a day-night fixture in Adelaide from December 6 to 10. The third Test will be held at The Gabba in Brisbane from December 14 to 18, followed by the iconic Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground from December 26 to 30. The series will conclude with the final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 7.
