Bombay High Court Maintains Ban On Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar Amid Ongoing Controversy

The Bombay High Court has refused to lift the stay orders that has been put on the film ‘Shaadi Ke Director Karan Aur Johar’ amid ongoing controversy. This decision came on Wednesday from a judicial Bench which includes Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice MS Karnik.

As per the reports of Bar and Bench, the court upheld the interim order passed earlier in March by Justice RI Chagla, rejecting an appeal from the film’s producers seeking to lift up the stay.

Karan Johar Alleges Misuse Of Name

The controversy started after renowned filmmaker Karan Johar accused the producers of the film upon misusing his name without his permission. He claimed the film’s title is violating his personality and fundamental rights and could mislead audience making them think that he is also associated with the project.

In June 2024, the court ruled in Karan’s favour and noted that the use of his name could confuse the public and can harm his goodwill.

Title Change Offer Not Enough

However, the film’s producers offered to change the title, the Bombay High Court directed them to approach the single-judge bench with a fresh plea instead. The Court emphasised that the current title creates a misleading impression among viewers and uses Karan’s name for promotional advantage.

Filmmakers Can Re-approach Court

The court has allowed the filmmakers to return with a revised plea if they choose to change the title or meet other conditions. However, for now, the stay order remains firmly in place and halted the release of the film until further notice.
