BJP worker murder: Anticipatory bail plea of Mamata Banerjee’s polling agent rejected; BJP says TMC party of criminals

The Calcutta High Court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of Sheikh Sufiyan in the West Bengal post-poll violence case being probed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Notably, Sufiyan was the election agent of West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram.

Sufiyan is accused in the murder case of BJP worker Debabrata Maity.

Earlier, the TMC leader was questioned by the CBI in Haldia in connection with its ongoing probe into post-poll violence in West Bengal.

Maity was allegedly attacked by Trinamool workers on May 3, a day after the West Bengal election results were announced. He succumbed to injuries at SSKM Hospital in Kolkata on May 13.

The Calcutta HC had directed National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to visit the areas where post-poll violence cases were reported. The NHRC in its report to the court had labelled several TMC MLAs, councillors and leaders as “notorious criminals/goons”.

The central probe agency had filed a murder case on August 31 and Sufiyan was questioned in September.

Notably, Mamata Banerjee had lost the election from Nandigram against BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari.

Mamata Banerjee-led TMC in West Bengal had achieved a stupendous victory by defeating the BJP in a bitterly fought Bengal election.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Amit Malviya took aim at Trinamol Congress, alleging Banerjee’s party of criminals.

“Calcutta High Court rejects anticipatory bail plea of Sheikh Sufiyan, Mamata Banerjee’s election agent, in the post poll violence case being probed by CBI. Can you imagine a sitting CM’s aide in dock for gruesome crimes against people of the State?

TMC is a party of criminals,” Malviya tweeted.
