BJP MLA rejoins TMC, third to return to Mamata Banerjee’s party after Bengal polls

BJP MLA Biswajit Das on Tuesday joined the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, saying that he felt “uncomfortable” in the saffron party.

Das, an MLA from Bagda, is the third lawmaker from the saffron party, who returned to the West Bengal’s ruling party after Mamata Banerjee’s landslide victory in the April-May Assembly elections.

“I never felt very comfortable in the BJP. I wanted to return to the TMC long ago. The BJP has done nothing for Bengal,” he said after joining the party in presence of TMC secretary general Partha Chatterjee in Kolkata.

“Due to some misunderstandings, some changes were made that shouldn’t have been made. I have returned to my home now and I will continue to work for people of my state and constituency,” he added

Das, a two-time MLA from the TMC, had crossed over to the BJP in 2019 and had successfully contested the 2021 West Bengal Assembly polls on a BJP ticket from Bagda.

On Monday, another BJP legislator, Tanmoy Ghosh, who had switched over to the saffron party from TMC in March ahead of the state elections, had returned to the Bengal’s ruling party.

Ghosh, an MLA from Bishnupur, had alleged that his BJP was indulging in vindictive politics. He had also claimed that the BJP was also attempting to trigger chaos among the people of West Bengal, because of which he joined the TMC.

Earlier in June, BJP MLA and party’s national vice-president Mukul Roy had rejoined the TMC, four years after he left the Mamata Banerjee-led party to join the saffron camp.

The BJP won 77 of the 292 Assembly seats in West Bengal polls, while the Trinamool Congress won 213 seats.

Earlier, BJP MLAs Nisith Pramanik and Jagannath Sarkar resigned to retain their Lok Sabha seats.
