BIG alert on new COVID variant: BA.3.2 ‘Cicada’ spotted across various countries; Know key symptoms, risks and precautions

ust when global discussions around COVID-19 had started to calm down, a new variant called BA.3.2, nicknamed “Cicada,” has come into attention again. It has been found in the United States and more than 20 other countries. Experts say this is not a reason to panic, but it shows that the virus is still evolving.

Why BA.3.2 Cicada Is Being Closely Watched

BA.3.2 stands out because it has around 75 mutations. Mutations are normal in viruses, but such a high number raises concerns. These changes can affect how fast the virus spreads, how our body reacts to it, and how well our immunity works against it. Early studies suggest this variant may partly escape immunity. However, scientists say lab results don’t always reflect real-world situations, and more research is needed.

Where Has the BA.3.2 Variant Been Found?

BA.3.2 has been detected in several US states, such as California, New York, and Tennessee, as well as in many other countries. While this shows it is spreading, it does not mean it is more dangerous. Other variants like XFG and NB.1.8.1 are still causing most infections, so BA.3.2 is just one part of the bigger picture.

BA.3.2 Symptoms: What Are the Signs?

So far, symptoms of BA.3.2 are similar to other recent variants, including:

  • Fever
  • Dry cough
  • Sore throat
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Body aches
  • Runny or blocked nose

Some people may also experience loss of taste or smell, or shortness of breath in severe cases. Symptoms can vary depending on a person’s immunity, age, and health condition.

Do Vaccines Still Work?

A major concern with new variants is whether vaccines remain effective. Even though BA.3.2 may avoid some immune protection, vaccines are still expected to protect against serious illness, hospitalisation, and complications. Booster doses are especially important to keep immunity strong.

Final Takeaway

There is no clear proof yet that BA.3.2 causes more severe illness. However, because of its mutations, it is being monitored closely. Basic precautions still help:

  • Stay up to date with vaccines
  • Wear masks in crowded places
  • Maintain hygiene
  • Get tested if you have symptoms
