BCCI Reveals New T20I Captain And Squad For Sri Lanka Tour

India unveiled their squad for the white-ball tour of Sri Lanka on Tuesday, July 18, surprising many with their choice of Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I captain instead of Hardik Pandya, who served as Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the ICC tournament. Despite leading the Indian T20I team throughout the 2023 season, Hardik Pandya was overlooked for the role of successor to Rohit Sharma. Additionally, he was not retained as vice-captain for the Indian T20I squad.

Suryakumar Yadav was appointed captain after leading the team in just 7 matches. During this tenure, he secured victories in 5 out of 7 T20Is and accumulated 300 runs. Known for elevating his game as captain, he notably scored two half-centuries and one century in these matches.

Team India is set to compete in a series comprising three T20Is and three ODIs. The T20I leg will be held in Pallekele, commencing on July 27th and concluding on July 30th. Following this, the ODIs will be hosted in Colombo, starting from August 02.

In an intriguing decision, Shubman Gill has been appointed vice-captain of the T20I squad. Riyan Parag has retained his spot in the T20I lineup for the series against Sri Lanka. However, despite Abhishek Sharma’s impressive century against Zimbabwe in the 5-match series, he did not find a place in the current squad.

The Indian team for the series is as follows:

T20I Squad: Suryakumar Yadav (C), Ꮪhubman Gill (VC), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rinku Singh, Riyan Parag, Rishabh Pant (WK), Sanju Samson (WK), Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, Mohd. Siraj.

ODI Squad: Rohit Sharma (C), Ꮪhubman Gill (VC), Virat Kohli, KL Rahul (WK), Rishabh Pant (WK), Shreyas Iyer, Shivam Dube, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Washington Sundar, Arshdeep Singh, Riyan Parag, Axar Patel, Khaleel Ahmed, Harshit Rana
