Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma the two important players of Indian cricket formally retired from Test format, leaving the public stunned and heartbroken. Most assumed the veteran pair would give one last shot at a historic Test series victory over England, something India hadn’t done since 2007. Both came agonizingly close during the 2021–22 tour, but the rearranged fifth Test at Edgbaston ended in despair. In spite of recent batting woes, their experience was considered most important for one final push.

Virat Kohli And Rohit Sharma’s Sudden Test Retirement

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at long last spoke out on the rumors about their sudden retirement announcements. Rohit Sharma was the initial one to leave, making the announcement in a low-profile Instagram Story. Virat Kohli also soon followed, posting a Instagram message where he looked back at his career and said it was time to pass the baton.

Were They Forced To Retire?

The moment the news of their retirement was announced, rumors started floating around the head coach Gautam Gambhir, chief selector Ajit Agarkar, and the BCCI being involved in making them take such a decision. BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla categorically dismissed such rumors, reiterating that both players made their own decisions and are still committed to playing for India in ODIs in the future.

BCCI VP Rajeev Shukla Clears The Air

Speaking to ANI in London, Rajeev Shukla mentioned about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire and BCCI had no involvement in that.

“I want to make it very clear once and for all. We are all feeling the absence of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. The decision to retire was made by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli on their own. It is the policy of BCCI that we never tell any player to retire. It was their call,” Shukla said. “They have taken retirement on their own. We will always them. We will always consider them as legendary batters. It’s very good for us that both of them are available for ODIs,” he added.
