BCCI Drops A Bombshell: Slaps Pay Cuts On Indian Players Based On…| Check Details

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is likely to introduce a performance-linked salary structure for the Indian cricketers. This new proposal comes as India had disappointing shows in Border Gavaskar Trophy and other key international series recently. In one such review meeting, there were discussions on how to make players more responsible for their respective performances between BCCI officials such as captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Gautam Gambhir, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

How Will The New Salary Cut System Work?

BCCI is planning on a variable pay structure, reportedly modeled on corporate appraisal. Thus, players may find their pay clipped if they perform below par, Indian Express further revealed. India’s setbacks such as the 3-1 debacle against Australia and the 3-0 defeat at the hands of New Zealand, ruled them out of contention for the final of the World Test Championship. The defeats motivated BCCI to look for changes that would inculcate responsibility and better results.

What Will Bring In The Salary Reduction?

Even though the fine prints of the system are not clearly defined yet, the BCCI is all set to cut match fees or downgrade some players in the lsit of central contracts in case of unmet performances. This move would encourage them to perform with great consistency.

The BCCI launched an incentive scheme in 2024, in which it was encouraging the cricketers to play more Test cricket. According to the incentive system, a player will get an incentive of Rs 30 Lakh for each match played in 50% of the Test matches from the season 2022-23.

This assignment will be more challenging for India as they would be playing England in the next limited-overs series and Champions Trophy, in which many will be looking out for the improvements in player’s performance and overall team balance.
