Bajrang Punia claims historic bronze as India equal its best-ever Olympic medal haul at Tokyo Games 2020

Making sure India’s medal tally swell to six at the Tokyo Olympics 2020, Indian wrestler Bajrang Punia clinched a historic bronze medal in the wrestling 65kg freestyle category on Saturday. Bajrang registered a comfortable win over Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov to win the bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Niyazbekov was no match for India’s Punia as the star wrestler stamped his authority in the bronze medal bout.

Bajrang claimed the bronze medal bout 8-0 to become the newly crowned medal winner at the Tokyo Games for the Indian contingent. With Bajrang securing the nation’s second medal in wrestling at the Tokyo Games 2020, India have managed to equal its best-ever Olympic medal haul of six in the Olympics. In the 2012 edition of the London Games, wrestlers Sushil Kumar had famously claimed silver and Yogeshwar Dutt bagged the bronze medal for India.

Bajrang dominated the bout with his smart attacking moves which paved the way for the Indian wrestler to secure a podium finish after his third-place play-off match at the Tokyo Games 2020. One of the most successful wrestlers in the modern era,  Punia is India’s first grappler to be ranked world No. 1 in any category. Punia is also the first wrestler to win two world championship medals.

One of India’s brightest medal prospects at the Tokyo Games 2020 in wrestling, Punia made sure India match its best performance at the Olympic Games by winning the bronze medal in the 65kg freestyle category. Talking about India’s memorable run at the Tokyo Games 2020, Mirabai Chanu (silver), PV Sindhu (bronze), Lovlina Borgohain (bronze), men’s hockey team ( bronze), and Ravi Kumar Dahiya (silver) and Bajrang have propelled the Asian nation to as many as six medals so far at the Summer Games.
