Torrential rains have been lashing many districts of Northeast India for the past several days, due to which landslides have occurred on several major roads and many tourists are stranded at different places. According to Jagran.com, 30 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents in the last two days.

The strong current of the Teesta river in North Sikkim has caused widespread devastation. According to the Mangan district administration, 112 people are stranded in Lachen and 1,350 in Lachung. The Phidang Bailey Bridge connecting Mangan to Chungthang has also been badly damaged.

The only means of access to the Dongu area, the Sanklang bamboo bridge, has completely collapsed due to heavy rainfall, leaving the area completely isolated. Floods and landslides have caused massive devastation in the states of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Manipur. About 60,000 people have been affected in Assam alone.

Flash floods and landslides in Assam have killed 8 people, while 9 people have lost their lives in similar incidents in Arunachal Pradesh. A landslide in Arunachal’s East Kameng district swept away a car, killing seven people from two families.

The Meteorological Department has issued red and orange alerts in some parts of Assam, and orange and yellow alerts in the rest of the northeastern states. Due to continuous rain in the last 24 hours, 8 people have died due to landslides in Assam.

The effect of floods has been seen in six districts, affecting about 10,000 people. According to ASDMA, 5 deaths have been recorded in Kamrup Metropolitan District alone. Urban Affairs Minister Jayanta Malla Barua said that three women died due to landslides in the Bonda area of Guwahati.

Guwahati received 111 mm of rain in a single day, which is a record of the last 67 years. The water level of many other rivers of the Northeast including the Brahmaputra has also increased rapidly.
