Army Sets Up Helpline for Soldiers And Veterans After Odisha Custodial Assault Incident

In response to recent incidents, including a custodial assault on an Army officer and his fiancée in Odisha, the Indian Army has introduced a 24/7 helpline for soldiers and veterans. The helpline number, 155306, provides nationwide support for emergencies, especially in cases of assault or distress.

Staffed by Military Police for Quick Response

The helpline is staffed by trained Military Police personnel, including both men and women, who can respond efficiently to emergency calls. When a call is received, the helpline team will record details and coordinate with local provost units and civil authorities for quick response across the country. A provost unit is a specialized military police unit responsible for maintaining law and order within the armed forces.

Streamlined Support with Nationwide Accessibility

The helpline, which can be dialed without a prefix across all major telecom networks, requires callers to provide their service details and a brief description of the incident. The helpdesk then coordinates with the nearest Provost Police unit to ensure swift assistance. Case tracking software has also been implemented to monitor incidents and ensure follow-up.

For Emergencies Only

The service is exclusively for emergencies, excluding non-crisis matters such as land disputes or marital conflicts. This initiative aligns with the Army’s commitment to bolstering support and safety measures for personnel amid growing security concerns.

Background: Assault Case Prompts Action

The launch of this helpline follows an incident on September 15 in Odisha, where an Army officer and his fiancée were reportedly assaulted while in custody. This occurred after they were waylaid by miscreants in Bhubaneswar. The case has since been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), with the Army raising concerns with the Odisha government regarding the incident.
