Amid tariff clash, Trump says Xi had a ‘Bad moment,’ assures US aims to help China, not hurt

Amid escalating tensions between the United States and China, President Donald Trump  assured that everything will be fine between the two countries. In a reassuring message, Trump described Chinese President Xi Jinping as “highly respected” and attributed recent challenges to just a “bad moment.” This development comes after China strongly condemned the United States’ recent tariff threat, describing it as an act of “willful intimidation and double standards.”

US aims to help China, says Trump

Emphasising shared interests, Trump expressed that neither leader wants a depression for their country and affirmed that the US aims to support China rather than harm it. Trump wrote on Truth Social, “Don’t worry about China, it will all be fine! Highly respected President Xi just had a bad moment. He doesn’t want Depression for his country, and neither do I. The U.S.A. wants to help China, not hurt it!!!  President DJT.”

Tensions between China and the US escalated after Trump on Friday announced his plans to impose a 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods and enforce export controls on all critical software starting November 1. His decision followed Beijing’s move to tighten export controls on rare earth materials, which are considered crucial to key US industries.

“Based on the fact that China has taken this unprecedented position, and speaking only for the USA, and not other Nations who were similarly threatened, starting November 1, 2025 (or sooner, depending on any further actions or changes taken by China), the United States of America will impose a Tariff of 100% on China, over and above any Tariff that they are currently paying. Also on November 1, we will impose Export Controls on any and all critical software,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.

As the threats followed, a spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce stated on Sunday that such “willful threats of high tariffs are not the right way to get along with China. China urged the United States to solve the differences through dialogue and “correct its wrong practices” The spokesperson emphasised that while Beijing does not seek a trade war, it is “not afraid of it either.”
