Amid Punjab Congress upheaval, Amarinder Singh meets Amit Shah in Delhi, discusses ‘farmers’ agitation’

Amid the political upheaval in Punjab Congress and speculation about his future course of action, former chief minister and Congress leader Amarinder Singh on Wednesday visited the residence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi.

Shortly after the meeting, Singh said that he discussed the ongoing farmers’ protest against the Centre’s three agri laws with Shah.

“Met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi. Discussed prolonged farmers’ agitation against Farm Laws and urged him to resolve crisis urgently with the repeal of the laws and guarantee MSP, besides supporting Punjab in crop diversification,” Singh’s media advisor Raveen Thukral quoted him as saying.

The meeting comes amid speculations in political circles that Singh, who was recently replaced by Charanjit Singh Channi as Punjab CM, might join the BJP.

The media adviser, however, on Tuesday dismissed the speculations and said that the Congress leader was on a personal visit to the national capital.

“Too much being read into @capt_amarinder’s visit to Delhi. He’s on a personal visit, during which he’ll meet some friends and also vacate Kapurthala house for the new CM. No need for any unnecessary speculation,” tweeted Thukral.

This is former Punjab CM’s first visit to the national capital after he resigned from the top post on September 18.

Amarinder Singh stepped down as Punjab CM amid a bitter power tussle with state’s Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu.

After his unceremonious exit from the state government, Singh had indicated he was still keeping his political options open, saying that he will consult with his friends before taking decision on his future political move.

Today’s meeting comes amid political tension in Congress’ Punjab unit over Sidhu’s resignation as chief of party’s state unit.

Sidhu on Tuesday resigned as Punjab Congress chief, pushing the party into deep crisis ahead of Assembly election in the state next year.
