Air Force staffer arrested in Assam for spying for Pakistan, was sharing information since…

Acivilian employee posted at Chabua Air Force Station in Assam has been taken into custody for allegedly spying for Pakistan and sharing critical information with its intelligence agencies, Rajasthan police said. Officials revealed that the accused had been involved in such activities since 2023.

Joint operation leads to arrest

The arrest was carried out through a coordinated operation by Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence, as confirmed by Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Prafulla Kumar. The action is part of a wider investigation into espionage networks targeting defense installations.

Investigation triggered by earlier arrest

The probe began after authorities arrested another suspect, Jhabararam, in Jaisalmer in January this year. Interrogation of the first suspect revealed links to Sumit Kumar, 36, prompting a deeper investigation into Kumar’s activities.

Employee exploited position for spying

Kumar, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, worked as a multi-tasking staff (MTS) member at Chabua Air Force Station. Police said he used his position to collect sensitive information about the base and then shared it with Pakistani handlers via social media.

Investigators found that Kumar had been in regular contact with Pakistani agents and had been exchanging information for money since 2023.

Sensitive military information leaked

Authorities stated that Kumar disclosed details about air force installations, including fighter aircraft positions, missile system locations and personnel-related data. He also helped his Pakistani contacts create social media accounts using mobile numbers registered in his own name.

Detention and interrogation

Kumar was initially detained at Chabua Air Force Station and then brought to Jaipur for questioning by a joint team from Air Force and Rajasthan Intelligence. During the interrogation, he admitted to sharing sensitive information with Pakistani intelligence since 2023 in return for financial compensation.

Legal proceedings underway

A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act, 1923 and the BNS, 2023. Police confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to uncover the full network and the extent of the information shared.
