Ahead Of Assembly Polls, Maharashtra Government Declares Cow As ‘Rajya Mata’ For Its Cultural Importance

Ahead of the upcoming elections, the Maharashtra government has declared the cow as ‘Rajya Mata’ (Mother of the State). This decision was made by the Mahayuti government to highlight the cow’s importance in Indian culture and traditions.

Importance of Cows in Indian Tradition

In the official order, the government explained that cows have been an essential part of Indian life for centuries. They are important not only spiritually but also scientifically. Cows have been called “Kamdhenu” due to their religious and economic value since Vedic times.

Benefits of Indigenous Cow Milk

The government pointed out that milk from indigenous cows is more nutritious and provides important nutrients for human health. The milk, cow dung, and cow urine are also used in Ayurveda and organic farming, making the decline in native cow breeds concerning.

Decrease in Indigenous Cow Numbers

The 2019 animal census showed that the number of indigenous cows in Maharashtra has dropped by 20.69%, with only 46,13,632 cows remaining. This decline is worrisome as these cows are vital for both agriculture and nutrition.

Rs 50 Daily Support for Cow Rearing

To help increase the number of indigenous cows, the government introduced a subsidy of Rs 50 per day for their care. This will support Goshalas (cow shelters) that are struggling financially. The scheme will be managed online by the Maharashtra Goseva Commission, with district committees set up to verify proper implementation.
