After Kapil Sibal’s criticism, Congress says CWC meeting will be held ‘soon’

Following the demand from G-23 leaders, a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will be called soon, Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said on Thursday. G-23 – the group of leaders who had written to Congress top brass seeking organisational changes in the Congress party – is demanding organizational elections in the party.

“Before leaving for Shimla, Congress president Sonia Gandhi had already indicated that a CWC meeting shall be called very soon. Accordingly, the CWC meeting shall be held in the coming days,” Surjewala was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

The clarification came a day after senior party leaders Kapil Sibal and Ghulam Nabi Azad demanded that CWC should be convened immediately. Addressing the media, Sibal, on Wednesday, said that his heart ‘breaks’ to see the current state of the Congress party. Stressing that the G-23 were ‘not jee Huzoor 23’, Sibal urged leaders such as Jyotiraditya Scindia, Sushmita Dev and others to return to the party.

We can have a dialogue in the CWC: Sibal said

“In our party at the moment, there is no president. So we don’t know who is making these decisions. We know and yet we don’t know… I believe one of my senior colleagues has written to the Congress president to immediately convene a CWC. So that at least some things that we can’t speak publicly, we can have a dialogue in the CWC as to why we are in this state,” Sibal said.

The veteran leader’s comments drew flak from Gandhi loyalists, who reminded Sibal that it was the same Congress leadership that made him a Union Minister. Shortly after his statement, protests broke out outside Sibal’s residence slamming the former minister for his comments targeting the Gandhi family.
