After Eight Decades, PMO To Leave South Block For New Executive Enclave

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), which is currently located in the historic South Block, will be shifted to the newly built Executive Enclave next month. This information has been received from government sources. This transfer is being seen as an important change under the Central Vista project.

The Executive Enclave, which is just a few hundred meters from the existing complex, has been developed for other high-level government departments including the PMO. This new building complex also houses the Cabinet Secretariat, the National Security Council Secretariat and a state-of-the-art conference facility. The special thing is that the new PMO will now be closer to the Prime Minister’s residence.

Officials say that this transfer was necessary due to limited space and lack of modern facilities in the old buildings. These offices, built during the British rule, were severely lacking in modern working conditions. Keeping in mind India’s image as an emerging global power, it was felt that it needed modern buildings to suit its needs.

This month, the Prime Minister inaugurated Kartavya Bhawan-3, where the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Personnel are now functioning. At the inauguration ceremony, he pointed out the limitations of the colonial buildings, saying they had neither adequate space, nor adequate light and ventilation. He also said it was hard to imagine that an important department like the Home Ministry worked from the same old building for almost a hundred years.

According to officials, the new PMO may also be given a new name, as other buildings have been renamed under the Central Vista project. According to reports, the new name may highlight the spirit of ‘service’. The Prime Minister had addressed the PMO at the start of his third term, saying, “PMO should be of the people, it cannot be Modi’s PMO,” thereby expressing his intention to make it a centre of public service.

As the key offices of the government are shifting to new buildings, the North Block and South Block, which have been the main centres of administration for the last eight decades, will be converted into a public museum. This museum will be called Yuge Yugen Bharat Museum. According to the government, an agreement has been signed between the National Museum and France Museums Development for its development. This museum will be a celebration of India’s cultural heritage, with the aim – “to know our glorious past, to illuminate the present and to imagine a bright future.”
