Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi was on Wednesday allowed to visit Agra to meet the family of a man who allegedly died in police custody.

“Four people have been allowed to visit Agra now…we are going there to meet the family,” said the Congress general secretary.

Earlier today, a man – Arun – accused of stealing Rs 25 lakh from the Jagdishpura police station died in police custody after his health deteriorated during interrogation.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Agra Muniraj G told PTI that the accused fell sick on Tuesday night while a raid was being carried out at his house to recover the stolen money. He was rushed to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Earlier today, Priyanka was detained by Uttar Pradesh police after being stopped at the Lucknow-Agra expressway from traveling to Agra.

Police said that she was stopped as the Agra district magistrate had requested not to allow any political leader to go there following the man’s death.

Speaking to reporters, Priyanka had said that the moment she tries to visit any place other than the party office, the administration tries to stop her.

“They say I can’t go to Agra. They stop me wherever I go. Should I keep sitting in restaurants? Just because it is politically convenient for them? I want to meet them, what is the big deal?” she said.

The Congress leader also took to Twitter to slam the Uttar Pradesh government, asking “what is the government so afraid of?”

“Arun Valmiki died in police custody. His family is seeking justice. I want to visit family. What is the UP government afraid of? Why am I being stopped? Today is Lord Valmiki Jayanti… PM Modi spoke big on Buddha but this is attacking his message,” Priyanka said in a tweet after she was stopped.

Earlier this month, Priyanka was detained by UP police while traveling to Lakhimpur Kheri district to meet the families of farmers who were killed in the October 3 violence.
