Afghanistan crisis: World will not legitimise seizure of power by violence, says EAM Jaishankar at SCO meet

Batting for an independent, unified and democratic Afghanistan, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar condemned the violence and terrorist attacks by the Taliban against civilians and state representatives, saying the world will not legitimise seizure of power by violence and force.

The world will not legitimise such action, the EAM added.

Speaking at Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, Jaishankar said that conflict must be settled through political dialogue.

‘The future of Afghanistan cannot be its past’

“Peace negotiations in earnest is the only answer. An acceptable compromise that reflects the Doha process, Moscow format and Istanbul process is essential. The future of Afghanistan cannot be its past. A whole new generation has different expectations. We should not let them down,” he said.

He also described the situation in Afghanistan as well as public health and economic recovery as pressing issues facing the region.

This statement from the EAM comes when Afghanistan is witnessing a series of terror attacks with Taliban fighters rapidly seizing control of many areas in the country.

Earlier today, the foreign ministers of the SCO called for an end to violence in Afghanistan against civilians and the authorities and urged the Afghan government to strengthen its position for the sake of stability.

On Friday, the Taliban claimed it was in control of 85 per cent of Afghanistan; however, Afghan government officials dismissed it as propaganda.

Civilian govt could fall within months: US intelligence assessments

Emboldened by the NATO troop withdrawal, the Taliban has been on a killing spree.

It killed 22 surrendering Afghan soldiers in northern Afghanistan last month. The video footage of the gruesome public execution shot in Faryab province’s Dawlat Abad town went viral on social media, inviting widespread condemnation.

The ultra-conservative Deobandi political and religious faction has also enforced Islamic law in captured areas of the country.

With the Taliban quickly taking control of several districts across the country, US intelligence assessments have suggested the civilian government could fall within months of US forces withdrawing.
