Aamir Khan On Hindi Cinema: ‘We’ve Lost Touch With Our Roots’ As South Films Rise

Actor Aamir Khan has criticized Hindi filmmakers for “forgetting their roots,” saying this is why Hindi films are not doing well at the box office. Meanwhile, films from the South are making a lot of money.

Aamir Khan Shares His Thoughts On Bollywood’s Struggles

On Sunday, Aamir Khan spoke at a press conference for PVR-INOX’s special film festival, Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar, which celebrates his contribution to Indian cinema. He explained that the success of South films comes from their directors focusing on strong emotions in their stories, something that filmmakers in the North have forgotten.

Javed Akhtar, a well-known songwriter and screenwriter, asked Aamir Khan why South Indian movies are doing well in theaters while Hindi movies are having a hard time.

“One of the reasons also is that writers or directors in Hindi perhaps have been trying to entertain an audience which is slightly finer. They’ve forgotten their roots. There are finer emotions, then there are baser emotions. Revenge is a strong emotion. But doubt is a light emotion; it’s a less attractive emotion. Anger, love, revenge. We (Bollywood) are choosing to talk about different aspects of life. We’re not sticking to the broader strokes,” Aamir told reporters.

Aamir Khan Explains The Growing Success Of South Indian Cinema

The actor, who owns Aamir Khan Productions, thinks that films from the South are getting more chances to be shown in single-screen theaters. In contrast, Hindi filmmakers are focusing on audiences who go to multiplexes, which is a smaller group of viewers.

“When multiplexes came, people in the film industry started talking about how the audience was changing, and how the audience in multiplexes was different. This conversation started getting stronger. At that time, there were films made specifically for multiplexes, and others for single-screen theaters. The South Indian films were often called single-screen films – they were mass-oriented, very impactful, and used broad storytelling. I think Hindi filmmakers began focusing more on making films for multiplexes,” he added.

Aamir Khan and Javed Akhtar are working together on Aamir’s upcoming film production, Lahore 1947, which stars Sunny Deol.
