Telangana has banned the production, storage, and sale of egg-based mayonnaise following an order by the Commissioner of Food Safety. The ban will reportedly last for one year from now. Telangana becomes the second state to enforce such prohibition after Kerala.
Rising Cases Of Food Poisoning From Mayonnaise
The warning has been issued after a rise in cases of food poisoning from egg yolk-based mayonnaise. Food safety officers said that most cases of food poisoning in the recent weeks and months were likely caused due to egg-based mayo. Additionally, more than a dozen contamination cases have been reported within the state this year.
According to reports, in January, at least 17 people fell ill after consuming shawarma that contained mayonnaise from a food outlet at Alwal. The blood tests revealed the existence of poisonous salmonella, GHMC officials said.
Telangana Govt Invokes The Provisions Of FSS (2006)
Amid a series of food poisoning cases reportedly due to mayo, the Telangana government has invoked the provisions of the Food Safety and Standards Act (2006). Under FSS, the govt. will regulate and monitor the storage, transport, manufacture, distribution, processing, packing, and sale of any harmful food product.
Section 18(1)(f) of the FSS Act allows authorities to take appropriate steps against cases that pose significant public health risks due to food products. In this regard, the consumers will be notified about the nature of potential health risks, steps to prevent or eliminate such risks, etc.
