No proposal for privatization of railway stations, says Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday informed the Lok Sabha that there is no proposal for privatization of railway stations.

“The lease rights for use of lands and Air Space shall be transferred to private parties for specified periods under the station redevelopment programme. The assets so created shall revert back to Railways after completion of the specified license period,” he further stated in his reply. 

The ownership of the railway land/air space shall remain with Railways, he added.

Vaishnaw said this in a written reply to the question, which asked, whether the Government is planning to privatise and railway stations or trains or any of the assets belonging to the Railways.

The railway minister further informed the Lok Sabha that “no passenger train services over Indian Railways is being operated by private players.”
