If you’re planning to buy a vehicle, and you want it quick you might have to settle for the lower variants. As with semiconductor shortage begging to hit the production mix, a waiting list of top variants has hit the ceiling.

Waiting periods for top variants have soared in India due to the semiconductor shortage. The Top models of top-selling variants are pegged currently between 3-6 months. And sources indicate that the problem might increase in the next few months once the festive season hits.

In one of the first indications of the problem starting to hit the Indian markets, Maruti will have to lower the production this month due to the semiconductor shortage. Sources indicate that Maruti had lowered the lowered production target of Aug from 1.72 Lakh to 1.59 Lakh units. Maruti had informed the vendors as well, that the semiconductor crisis will start impacting production.

Not only Maruti but other carmakers are also struggling with the semiconductor shortage w.r.t. production. Tata Motors also struggling to increase the production of models like Nexon, Altroz to meet demand. Sources indicate, that the co has been looking to increase production given the good demand for the vehicles, but hasn’t been able to because of semiconductor supply.

And that is why the top variants have been seeing an increased demand vs the base variants. There is almost 2-4 times difference in both the variants given the need for semiconductors in higher segments. A vehicle with higher segments will need more semi-conductors given the use of electronic equipments and functions.
