The government of Jammu and Kashmir has decided to install a 100-feet long tricolour at historic Hari Parbat fort in Srinagar.

“At the outset, the Divisional Commissioner, Kashmir while welcoming all the participants informed that from last some months directions have been passed to all the Deputy Commissioners and HODs for description/display/hoisting of National Flag strictly as per the Flag code of India 2002 and to ensure that there is no violation in this regard,” an official notification read on Monday.

The proposal to hoist the flag – 24 feet x 36 feet – at the hilltop fort was made by the Flag Foundation of India.

“Thereafter, the chair was apprised that Flag Foundation of India has proposed to ‘hoist a biz size flag at Hari Parbat Fort at a height of 100 feet having the description of 24 feet x 36 feet and sought all the necessary logistic support from the Divisional Administration as well as from the stakeholders viz. Archaeological Survey of India, UT of J&K, Forest Department, Airport Authority of India, Tourism Department,” it added.

Hari Parbat is also known as Kooh-e-Maran lies on the west of Dal Lake in Srinagar, in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the district administration, the fort was built by Afghan Governor Atta Mohammed Khan in the 18th century. Later a long wall was constructed in 1590 by Emperor Akbar. Surrounded by commendable structures from all religions, this fort sits at the top giving a spectacular view of Dal Lake.

This fort is maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and still stands impressive with old apartments and tall pillars. Hari Parbat provides a top view of the Makhdoom Sahib shrine.
