The transfer saga of former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum has taken a major twist as the Dutch International is set to join Paris Saint Germain (PSG). For weeks, most major media outlets reported that he will join Barcelona however he seems to have changed his mind at the last minute. 

With Wijnaldum running his contract down at Liverpool, he is currently a free agent and has his future completely in his own hands. With his former international coach, Ronald Koeman in charge at Camp Nou, signing for Barcelona looked like an ideal move for the 30-year-old. However, various reports claim that PSG has offered him double the salary than what the Catalan club were ready to give him. The Netherlands international is set to sign a three-year deal at the Parc Des Prince. 

PSG coach Mauricio Pochettino spent five years in the Premier League and will know Wijnadlum very well having played against him extensively. His presence will offer PSG goals in midfield along with a lot of athletism, steel, and tactical discipline. 

The Dutch international joined Liverpool from Newcastle in 2016 after the Magpies were relegated from the Premier League. Wijnaldum spent five years at Anfield in which he was an integral part of both the Champions League and Premier League winning team. His best moment in a red shirt came in the 2019 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona in which he scored two goals as Jurgen Klopp’s side memorably overturned a 3-0 deficit at home to reach the final on their way to their sixth European Cup victory.

He played 237 matches for Liverpool in all competitions and scored 22 goals. Before coming to England with Newcastle in 2015, Wijnaldum spends four years with PSV Eindhoven after signing from Feyenoord. He is also an integral member of the Netherlands national team having made 74 international appearances for them.
