After days of rumors and speculation about former Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief K. Annamalai leaving the party, the former Indian Police Service officer on Tuesday tendered his resignation after meeting party National President Nitin Nabin and National General Secretary B.L. Santosh in the national capital. His resignation has triggered fresh political speculation and raised questions about his next move in Tamil Nadu politics.
The young leader’s resignation comes amid speculation that he may form a new political party, with supporters adding fuel to the buzz by erecting large banners and posters across Coimbatore featuring slogans such as “Our Leader, Come and Lead Us,” adorning major roads and public spaces in the city just days ahead of Annamalai’s birthday on June 4.
The political future of former Tamil Nadu BJP president K. Annamalai has become the subject of widespread discussion after the appearance of these posters across Coimbatore, raising questions about a possible major political move, including the launch of a new platform following his exit from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The displays have appeared prominently across the city ahead of his birthday celebrations.
This development comes amid reports of growing differences between Annamalai and sections of the BJP’s state and national leadership.
Is a new movement on the horizon?
A New Nationalist Party: Some believe he may start his own political party based on nationalist ideas. The aim would be to create a strong third political option in Tamil Nadu besides the two major Dravidian parties.
The Independent Route: Annamalai is already seen as different from traditional Dravidian politicians. By following an independent path, he could avoid the internal party issues that many believe contributed to his removal from the BJP state president post.
The changing political landscape
This resignation comes at a time when Tamil Nadu is undergoing a profound transformation. The 2026 Assembly elections witnessed a historic upset, in which the party led by actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay, the Tamizhaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), formed the government after winning 108 seats. With the rise of the TVK, the decades-old dominance of the DMK and AIADMK has faced a formidable challenge, creating a vacuum that, many believe, Annamalai is now attempting to fill.
Who is Annamalai?
Annamalai is not a career politician and worked in the Indian Police Service (IPS) for nine years in various positions in Karnataka before resigning from the service in 2019, citing personal reasons. After leaving the IPS, he joined the BJP in 2020 and quickly rose to become one of the party’s most visible and prominent faces in Tamil Nadu.
As Tamil Nadu BJP president from 2021 to 2025, Annamalai led several campaigns across the state. He also built a strong support base among young voters and gained a large following on social media.
His removal as Tamil Nadu BJP president earlier this year surprised many supporters. Questions about his future grew after the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Despite being one of the BJP’s most well-known leaders in the state, he did not contest the polls.
His criticism of the Centre’s decision to advance the implementation of the three-language policy for Class IX students also sparked political debate. It led to fresh speculation about his relationship with the party leadership.
