Afghanistan shocked England and knocked them out of Champions Trophy 2025 following which former cricketer Michael Vaughan wasn’t surprised at England’s early exit. The match was held at Gaddafi Stadium. With a total of 325/7 on the board, Afghanistan managed to hold off England by just eight runs in a thrilling contest.

Vaughan reflected on the result, and pointed out that England has not been good enough in white-ball cricket especially in subcontinent conditions. Afghanistan’s victory brought back the memories of similar win against England in 2023 ODI World Cup at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi.

“Brilliant from Afghanistan .. Thoroughly deserved win .. England just haven’t played good enough white-ball cricket for a couple of years .. this result isn’t a surprise in these conditions,” Vaughan wrote on X.

Ravi Shastri, the former India head coach also highlighted on England’s performance emphasizing that the team must learn to take subcontinent conditions more seriously.

“Afghanistan. You guys rock. Kammaaal Kaardi. For England. Take playing in the Subcontinent seriously with no excuses. Only then you will be recognised as a Team that can TRAVEL”, Ravi Shastri wrote on X

The last group stage matches in Group B will determine the semifinal encounters. The top team from each group will meet the second team from the other group. In case Australia and South Africa win their own games and India beats New Zealand, India will lead Group A and might encounter Australia in the semifinal. Alternatively, in case India finishes second in Group A, they will meet South Africa.
