Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus government raised objections to India’s comments after protesters set Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s residence on fire. The country termed it as ‘unexpected’ and ‘inappropriate.’ The interim government expressed its resentment, stating that it is the country’s “internal matter”.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman spearheaded the fight for freedom from the residents, and Bangladesh attained Independence from Pakistan in 1971 was also announced from the residence. Later, the residence was converted into a memorial. India condemned the barbaric act and also damaged the historic residence by putting it on fire.

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said,” It is regrettable that the historic residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a symbol of the heroic resistance of the people of Bangladesh against the forces of occupation and oppression, was destroyed on February 5,  2025.  All those who value the freedom struggle that nurtured Bangla identity and pride are aware of the importance of this residence for the national consciousness of Bangladesh. The act of vandalism should be strongly condemned.”

According to the BSS news agency, the foreign ministry of Bangladesh reacted to India’s comments, while linking the incident of “Dhanmondi 32” to the nation’s internal affairs. Earlier, Bangladesh objected to Sheikh Hasina’s address and lodged a protest with India’s Deputy High Commissioner.

The Foreign ministry said Bangladesh does not comment on internal matters of other countries and expects the same conduct from others.
