Transfer News: Atlanta United Pursues Miguel Almiron’s Return As Talks With Newcastle Heat Up

international media news
January 18, 2025 97 Views0

Atlanta United have reportedly reignited their pursuit of Miguel Almiron, with the club in talks with Newcastle United over the possibility of bringing the Paraguayan star back to MLS. This follows a shift in interest, as Charlotte FC, initially in talks with Almiron for the 2025 season, diverted their attention to Ivory Coast’s Wilfried Zaha. As a result, Atlanta has stepped in, and while the negotiations are still in early stages, the move is now seen as a “real possibility” for the upcoming season.

Almiron’s Potential Return To Atlanta

Almiron’s possible return to Atlanta United is gaining traction, as the club is reportedly ready to offer £8.5M for the Paraguayan player. Atlanta has two open Designated Player spots to fill this offseason—one for a striker and another for a winger, and Almiron is a perfect fit for the latter. The club is also eyeing Middlesbrough’s Emmanuel Latte Lath and Crystal Palace’s Odsonne Edouard for the striker role. Almiron, who has only played 398 minutes across all competitions this season, is anticipated to leave Newcastle in January. The winger was instrumental for Atlanta from 2017 to 2018, contributing to their MLS Cup victory and earning several accolades before his record-setting transfer to Newcastle in 2019.

Almiron’s Impressive MLS Record And Atlanta’s Next Steps

Almiron enjoyed a remarkable MLS career, scoring 21 goals and contributing 28 assists in only 62 regular-season matches, along with one goal and two assists in six playoff games. Regarding Atlanta United’s efforts to bring back their former star, they have until the end of January to secure a potential agreement with Newcastle. Meanwhile, the club has kicked off its preseason training, with players and staff already arriving for camp this week. The first friendly match of the preseason is set for January 25 against MLS NEXT Pro team Chattanooga FC.
