RBI Alert On Banknote! Do You Still Have A Withdrawn Rs 2000 Note? Here’s How And Where To Exchange

The Reserve Bank has stated that 98.12% of the withdrawn Rs2000 banknotes have been returned to the banking system, with only ₹6,691 crore worth of such notes still in the hands of the public.

On May 19, 2023, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) announced the withdrawal of Rs 2000 denomination banknotes from circulation. According the apex bank, as of December 31, 2024, only Rs 6, 691 crore worth of Rs 2000 notes remain with the public, marking a sharp decline from the total value of Rs 3.56 lakh crore in circulation when the notes were demonetised on May 19, 2023. Though the Rs 2000 banknotes continue to be a legal tender.

RBI added that the total value of Rs 2000 banknotes in circulation, which was Rs 3.56 trillion at the close of business on May 19, 2023, declined to Rs 6,691 crore at the close of business on December 31, 2024.

Will You Be Able To Exchange These Money Now?

Easy facility to exchange or deposit the Rs 2,000 notes were available at all branches until October 7, 2023. But Now You can exchange or deposit these notes only in selective branches. The option is now available only at the 19 issue offices of the Reserve Bank.

19 Branches where You Can Deposit/Exchange the 2000 Banknotes

The RBI offices in the following cities will accept ₹2000 banknotes: Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.

The Rs 2000 banknotes were introduced in November 2016, following the demonetisation of the then-prevailing Rs 1000 and Rs 500 banknotes.
