As talks of salary hikes gain momentum, the possibility of an 8th Pay Commission has become a topic of great interest and anticipation among government employees. Over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners are eagerly awaiting on the updates to their pay packages revision. The Confederation of Central Government Employees and Workers has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to form the new Central Pay Commission, without further delay.

However, the union finance ministry recently said that it has no current plans to form a new Pay Commission. The government implemented the 7th Pay Commission in 2016. Notably, the 7th Pay Commission had significantly increased the minimum monthly salary from Rs 7,000 to Rs 18,000.

8th Pay Commission: Government Planning A New Mechanism?

The central government may introduce a new mechanism for the timely salary revisions of its employees. According to media reports, the government is considering a new approach to salary revisions, potentially linking them to performance metrics or inflation rates. The reports further said that this could enable more frequent and automatic salary adjustments, eliminating the need for lengthy waits between pay commissions.

However, concrete details remain scarce, leaving employees in a state of uncertainty.

What Central Govt Employees Are Waiting For?

Shiv Gopal Mishra, secretary of the staff side of the National Council of Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM), said that the forthcoming 8th Pay Commission shall propose a fitment factor of “at-least 2.86”. If the government OKs the proposed fitment factor, central government employees can expect a significant salary boost. The minimum basic pay would jump from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480, representing an impressive 186% pay hike.

Moreover, the minimum pension for central government pensioners may increase significantly from Rs 9,000 to Rs 25,740 if the proposed fitment factor is implemented.

It remains to be seen whether the central government will opt for a new mechanism for salary revisions or stick with the traditional Pay Commission method.
