The impending implementation of the 8th Pay Commission has generated widespread discussion and anticipation, as the 7th Pay Commission’s term comes to an end. However, the latest developments on the new pay commission have sparked widespread disappointment among over 1 crore central government employees and pensioners.

8th Pay Commission: What Are The Latest Developments?

Finance Ministry – The Union Finance Ministry has put an end to rumours, stating that there are no immediate plans to set up the 8th Central Pay Commission. In a response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, Pankaj Chaudhary, Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance, has clarified that there are currently no plans to establish a new pay commission.

NC-JCM – The National Council (Staff Side) Joint Consultative Machinery (NC-JCM) has urged the Union Cabinet Secretary to expedite the formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission, at the earliest. The Staff Side of the NC-JCM cited that nine years have passed since the 7th Pay Commission’s implementation and the next review is due to take effect from January 1, 2026.

Secretary Of NC-JCM – Shiva Gopal Mishra, Secretary, NC-JCM said, “The 7th Central Pay Commission was constituted on February 28, 2014, nearly two years before its implementation on January 1, 2016. With only a year left for the next revision, there is no justification for further delay.” He added, “the Pay Commissions used to take almost 2 years period for submitting their final report to the government and the government takes 3 to 6 months for considering and implementing its recommendations.”

What We Know Till Now?

Mishra earlier said that the next Pay Commission possibly recommend a fitment factor of “at-least 2.86”. If the government approves the proposed fitment factor, it would result in a significant 186% increase in the minimum salary, jumping from Rs 18,000 to Rs 51,480. Additionally, at the same fitment factor, the minimum pension for central government employees could jump from Rs 9,000 to a staggering Rs 25,740.

For now, the government has put an end to rumours about declaring the establishment of the 8th Pay Commission in the upcoming Budget.
