5.9-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Japan, Tsunami Warning Issued

An earthquake of 5.9-magnitude has jolted Japan’s Torishima in the Izu Islands, around 8:14 AM. However, no injuries and damage have been reported so far.

Following the earthquake, Japan Meteorological Agency has released a tsunami warning and advisory of up to 1 metre of waves in the area within minutes. The Meteorological Agency said that tsunami waves can hit Izu Islands, Ogasawara Islands.

According to the residents, they didn’t feel the tremors.

50-cm-high tsunami has been observed at Yaene in Hachijojima Island and 10-cm-high wave at Ako and Tsubota in Miyakejima Island as a result of 5.9 magnitude earthquake.

“A tsunami has occurred, so it is dangerous to be in the sea or near the coast. Anyone in the sea should get out of the water immediately and move away from the coast. The tides will continue to be strong, so please do not enter the sea or approach the coast until the warning is lifted”, said Japan Meteorological Agency.

As per the reports, Japan experiences around 1,500 earthquakes every year.
