4.6-Magnitude Earthquake Hits China, Tremors Felt In Myanmar

A magnitude 4.6 earthquake struck south western China on Friday, May 16 with tremors felt in neighbouring Myanmar. According to U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at around 6:30 am with the epicenter 32 km from Baoshan, Yunnan. The affected countries were Myanmar and China. There have been no immediate reports of major damage or casualties, authorities are monitoring the situation. National Center for Seismology (NCS), the nodal agency of the Government of India for monitoring of earthquake activity in the country, also reported the earthquake.

Notably, an earthquake of magnitude 4 struck Afghanistan in the early hours of Friday. The tremor occurred at 00:47:40 IST, with its epicentre located at a latitude of 36.56°N and longitude of 70.99°E, at a depth of 120 kilometres. Sharing a post on X, the National Center for Seismology wrote, “EQ of M: 4.0, On: 16/05/2025 00:47:40 IST, Lat: 36.56 N, Long: 70.99 E, Depth: 120 Km, Location: Afghanistan.”

Earlier on Thursday, a magnitude-5.2 earthquake hit the city of Konya, Turkey.

What To Do After Earthquake?

Be prepared for aftershocks.

Avoid using open flames in damaged buildings. Earthquakes can damage gas lines, so don’t use lighters or matches.

Stay away from the beach, if you live near coastal region.

Stay alert as earthquakes can cause dangerous tsunamis and flooding.

Drive with caution.

Have an emergency plan.
