In the absence of several key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Jasprit Bumrah, India continued its good run in the ongoing series against the West Indies. Riding on some good half-centuries from Shreyas Iyer (63), Sanju Samson (54), and Axar Patel (64), the Men in Blue defeated the hosts by 2 wickets in the 2nd ODI. After the match, Iyer conducted an on-field interview where he shared how the work done off the field has helped him.
“This is a replica of the work that you do off the field,” Iyer said before realising the work he was looking for was result and not replica. “Yaar replica nahi, it’s the wrong work, whatever you see on the field is the result of what you do off the field,” he added.
Iyer has been in fine form in the ongoing series against West Indies as he had also scored 54 runs off 57 balls in the 1st ODI which India won by three runs. Windies bowlers did well to send Shikhar Dhawan, Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav back in the hut with 79 runs on board. Iyer and Sanju Samson then added a 99-run stand for the fourth wicket to bring India back in the game.
After the match, Iyer recalled the partnership between him and Samson and called it a crucial one in context of the game. “It was a crucial partnership. We lost two back-to-back wickets. We were 60 for 3 (79/3), and from there, we had to rebuild. Sanju came in and obviously showed a lot of intent. I was already batting. I had faced around 20 balls and was batting on 15. I knew what I was going to do, and Sanju at the same time, faced a few balls, and then he went after the spinners. He hit them for two sixes, and suddenly, the momentum shifted towards us. From there onwards, we built on the partnership and carried forward the momentum,” he said.
