WI vs IND: India script history, break Pakistan’s ODI world record after a sensational win vs West Indies

The Indian team smashed several records on their way to a sensational two-wicket victory against West Indies in Trinidad in the second ODI and hence sealed the series 2-0 with a game left, to be played at the same venue. While this was the third-highest successful run-chase in the Caribbean in ODIs, India also recorded the most ODI series wins in bilaterals against one opposition.
Before the series, India were on level with Pakistan with 11 ODI series wins against same opposition. However, the Men in Blue achieved the world record of 12 consecutive series wins against West Indies after the second ODI, with Pakistan on the second spot with 11 series wins in a row against Zimbabwe from 1996 to 2021. The Men in Green occupy the third spot as well with 10 series wins back-to-back against West Indies from 1999 to now.
Since 2007, Indian haven’t lost a bilateral trophy against West Indies in the 50-over format whether at home or in the Caribbean.
Most consecutive ODI series wins against a same opposition
12 – India vs West Indies (2007-2022)
11 – Pakistan vs Zimbabwe (1996-2021)
10 – Pakistan vs West Indies (1999-2022)
9 – South Africa vs Zimbabwe (1995-2018)
9 – India vs Sri Lanka (2007-2021)
Chasing 312 runs, India were in a spot of bother at 79/3, having lost skipper Shikhar Dhawan, his opening partner Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav. Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson took the side out of trouble and shared an attacking partrnership of 99 runs. However, unfortunately for India, none of them could continue for long after their respective half-centuries and were dismissed in a span of six overs.
Axar Patel then took the onus on himself to keep the West Indies bowlers at bay and hit some outstanding shots. A maiden ODI fifty, a career-best score and taking his side to the win staying unbeaten, it was as unbelievable win as it could get, resulting in a second heartbreak for the hosts in as many matches.
