The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said that India expects the incident of the stabbing of an Indian student in Australia is dealt with seriously and action is taken against perpetrators.
Shubham Garg, 28, was on October 6 stabbed multiple times in the face, chest and abdomen in Australia by a man who allegedly demanded cash. The 27-year-old suspect, Daniel Norwood was arrested by police and charged with attempted murder, Daily Telegraph newspaper reported.
Speaking at a press conference, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said that Indian High Commission is in close touch with local authorities and that one suspect is in custody.
“We have knowledge of the incident. As per our info, he is in hospital and under treatment. Our High Commission in Canberra and Consulate in Sydney are in close touch with local authorities. We are in contact with the family,” Bagchi said.
“Some of our officials met him in the hospital in Sydney. We extended our consular services. We have also come to know that a suspect was taken into custody. Australian authorities will give you more details on investigation. Our expectation is that it’s seen seriously,” he added.
The MEA spokesperson said that India has requested the Australian High Commission here to expedite travel documents of visas so Garg’s family members could urgently visit him.
“I’m happy to hear that it’s done,” Bagchi said.
The suspect approached Garg near the Pacific Highway Lane Cove and allegedly threatened him while demanding cash, In The Cove newspaper reported
The Indian student later sought assistance from a nearby house before being taken to Royal North Shore Hospital. The man underwent surgery and remains there in a serious but stable condition, the NSW Police Force statement said.
