Chennai Super Kings (CSK) gave their squad a new look in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction and with an eye on the future, they bought many youngsters. While the team management re-signed its core in the auction, CSK also spent money on new players and a few of them have made their debuts in the ongoing season.
One of the youngsters CSK signed up was Rajvardhan Hangargekar. A member of the India U-19 World Cup-winning team, Hangargekar joined CSK for a big sum of Rs 1.50 crore. A new ball-bowler, Hangargekar can also make contributions with the bat and was a vital addition to the Yellow Army.
But he has been on the bench and was seen supporting his team from the stands last week. This left a few fans disappointed, who took to social media to let the franchise know about the management’s decision.
CSK head coach Stephen Fleming has now revealed the reason behind holding back Hangargekar. Speaking to CSK, Fleming said: “You have to be very careful. I know he’s (Rajvardhan) performed at the Under-19 level but this is a step up. We’re very conscious of the skills that he needs to perform. We don’t wanna just throw him in and damage him. We want to make sure we realise the potential that he’s got. ”
CSK’s bowling department has struggled to deliver consistently in Deepak Chahar’s absence. The four-time IPL Champions don’t have an experienced Indian pacer in their line-up, which has hurt them the most. The batsmen too haven’t been able to score consistently, which has added to the team’s woes.
With only 2 wins from 8 matches, CSK sit at the 9th spot in the points table and are on the cusp of an early elimination. A couple of defeats will end their chances of making it to the playoffs of IPL 2022.
