Amidst the political frenzy over the upcoming election of a new party president, senior Congress leader Digvijay Singh gave way to speculations that he might be in the running for the post. On asked whether he will also file the nomination for the post of Congress president, Singh said that ‘people should wait till September 30 (to know)’. Notably, September 30 is the last date to file nominations for the post of party president.
The Senior Congress leader today met interim party chief Sonia Gandhi in Delhi amid speculation that he may join his colleagues Ashok Gehlot and Shashi Tharoor as a candidate for the party president post. Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, during a break from his ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Kerala, spoke about the upcoming elections for the post of party president and said that it is not just an organisational position but it is an ideological post and a belief system. Whoever goes on to become the Congress president should remember that he/she represents a set of ideas, a belief system and a vision of India, he added.
“You’re taking a historic position which defines a particular view of India. Congress president is an ideological post. You represent a set of ideas, a belief system and a vision of India,” Rahul Gandhi said while telling the reporters the one piece of advice he would like to give to the next party president.
Rahul Gandhi further clarified that whoever becomes the Congress president next will have to give up the current post they may be holding. “What we had decided in Udaipur Chintan Shivir (one person, one post) is a commitment of Congress and I expect that commitment will be maintained (on party’s presidential post),” said the Waynad MP.
So far, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, former Union Minister Manish Tewari and Shashi Tharoor are speculated to be in the running for the post of Congress president, the election for which is slated on October 17 at all PCCs. The results of the same will be announced on October 19.
