Delhi Metro travellers now have a massive reason to rejoice, especially those travelling from New Delhi Railway Station to the Indira Gandhi International Airport. Starting Wednesday, March 22, the travel time between the two metro stations will come down significantly.
The top speed of Delhi Metro on the Airport Express Metro Line is set to increase from today. Now, the trains on the line can touch a maximum speed of 90 kmph, and from Wednesday, it will be increased to 100 kmph. Untill now, the top speed of metro trains on the airpot line was 80kmph.
The advancement in speed has been achieved through technological enhancement, news agency PTI quoted officials as saying.
The increase in speed is set to significantly cut down the travel time between NDLS and Delhi Airport Metro Station to around 20 minutes. The 23-km line connects New Delhi and Dwarka Sector-21 metro stations.
Currently, travelling from New Delhi metro station to Airport metro station takes around 25 minutes. With the increase in speed to 100 kmph, the travel time would reduce by three-four minutes, according to the officials. Moreover, the DMRC is planning to further increase the metro’s top speed to 120 kmph.
The average speed of metro trains running on regular corridors such as Yellow Line, Blue Line, Red Line, etc., is 40-50 kmph, according to a senior DMRC official.
Cheer for Commuters on the Yellow Line
Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro has made extensive arrangements to cater to the additional crowd on Yellow Line, in view of the partial closure/diversions imposed on the National Highway – 48 near Gurugram. The DMRC has increased the number of train trips from 478 to 637 per day on the Qutub Minar to HUDA City Centre section of Yellow Line, an increase of almost 33 per cent.
Two additional trains have been inducted on the Yellow Line to accommodate more number of passengers during peak hours. With this, the total number of trains operated on this line will go up from 57 to 59.
