A Delhi court observed that if the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) requires to arrest Congress MP Karti Chidambaram then he needs to be given notice three days earlier.
This comes after Karti moved an anticipatory bail application in a Delhi court, in connection with the alleged visa scam case.
The CBI said that the application is not maintainable at this stage and stated that they’ll give notice at least 48 hours earlier if he needs to be arrested. However, the court observed that if CBI requires to arrest, he needs to be given notice three working days earlier.
The court further stated that the accused shall join the investigation within 16 hours after he reaches India. Court noted that he is presently not in India.
The court had on Thursday handed over Karti’s Chartered Accountant S Bhaskararaman to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for four day’s custodial interrogation in connection with a Rs 50 lakh alleged bribery case for clearing visas of 263 Chinese nationals working at Talwandi Sabo Power Ltd in Punjab.
Special CBI Judge Prashant Kumar passed the order noting that the investigation was at its initial stage, and the accused was required to be quizzed.
The bribery incident is reported to have taken place in 2011 when Karti Chidambaram’s father P Chidambaram was the Union home minister.
‘It is reflected from the submissions of CBI that investigation has started in this case which is at its inception and investigation officer requires some time to collect all the relevant information which may be necessary in this case, therefore, in my considered opinion, it would be appropriate that 4 days police remand custody is granted to the CBI,’ the judge had said.
The CBI has filed a fresh case against Lok Sabha MP Karti Chidambaram for allegedly facilitating visas of 250 Chinese nationals after receiving illegal gratification of Rs 50 lakh in 2011.
The CBI had conducted raids on several premises of both Karti and his father P Chidambaram across Delhi and Chennai on Tuesday.
