Pakistani batting sensation Babar Azam will find himself pitted against run-machine Virat Kohli when India resume its iconic rivalry with arch-rivals Pakistan at the Asia Cup 2022. While ex-India skipper Kohli is eyeing a sensational comeback to international cricket, Pakistan captain Babar will enter the Asia Cup 2022 as the No.1 batter. All eyes will be on Kohli as the batting icon is seeking a fresh start at the Asia Cup 2022.
The Kohli-starrer Indian side will meet arch-rivals Pakistan in their Asia Cup 2022 opener at Dubai. Speaking ahead of the blockbuster clash between the two traditional rivals, legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram weighed in on the best batsman debate. Sharing his views at a press conference, former Pakistan skipper Akram opined that Babar is on the right track to be one of the modern greats.
“The comparisons are only natural. When we played people used to compare Inzamam, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar. Before that it was Sunil Gavaskar Javed Miandad, G Vishwanath and Zaheer Abbas. Babar has been very consistent, because he has got the right technique. He is very hungry and very fit. He is still a young captain but is learning very fast,” Akram told Star Sports. Babar has remained as Pakistan’s go-to batter in the build-up to the upcoming edition of the Asia Cup.
“However, comparisons with Virat it is too early. Babar is on the right track to be where Virat Kohli is but to compare him with him at this stage is too early. But he is absolutely on the right track to be one of the modern greats,” Akram added. Babar holds the numero uno spot in One Day International (ODI) and T20I rankings of the game.
The premier batter of the Green Army had played a crucial role in setting up Pakistan’s path-breaking win over India at the ICC World T20 last year. Meanwhile, run-machine Kohli is heading to the Asia Cup after being rested for the entire West Indies series. Kohli has struggled for form across all formats and the ex-Indian skipper had failed to fire for India in his previous assignments.
