To the delight of Indian fans, star batter Virat Kohli returned to form in the recently concluded Asia Cup. With 276 runs to his tally, Kohli finished as the Men in Blue’s top-scorer in the event and also broke his three-year drought to score his 71st international century in India’s clash against Afghanistan at the Dubai International Stadium.
With eyes on next month’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, the Men in Blue will look to finalise their preparation with back-to-back bilateral three-match T20I series against Australia and South Africa. Kohli-starrer India will play the series opener against Australia at the IS Bindra, Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali on Tuesday (September 20).
Keeping aside the on-field pressure, Kohli hilariously explained to fans the meaning of the ‘Lappa shot’ which is a popular slang used in street cricket by Indian people. The ex-Indian skipper explained “Lappa is a slog over mid-wicket. A guy who doesn’t probably know how to bat well knows only one shot which is lappa.
“We have played a lot like this. And there were a lot of players who knew only this shot, just a slog over mid-wicket. It would be very frustrating for me as well as the team to see the batter getting out playing that shot. It is fine if you get out while playing proper cricketing shots,” Kohli added in a video shared by PUMA’s official social media accounts as part of a video named ‘Do you know your cricket slangs.’
Kohli was born and brought up in the national capital of Delhi which is at the heart of India’s famous Hindi belt. The Indian cricket legend is known to be fluent in both Hindi and Punjabi languages alongside English.
Kohli’s comeback in the Asia Cup gave a sense of massive relief to Indian fans as he had gone through a rough patch of form before that. He had a forgettable Indian Premier League (IPL) season with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and found runs hard to come in India’s multi-format tour of England.
