Comedian-actor Vir Das courted controversy with his video post in which he passed a snide remark on how comics are treated in India. Taking to Instagram, Vir shared a clip from one of his shows that soon became a talking point on the internet.
In the said video, Vir states that comedians in India get punished for ‘hurting sentiments’. He says, “You come to an Indian comic, you tell us a comedian got slapped, we don’t ask ‘by who?’ We ask ‘by what?’.” He then adds, “Sedition, defamation, hurting sentiments. What did they get slapped with?”
Social media users were not very amused with Vir’s comment and expressed their displeasure under his post.
Notably, this isn’t the first time that Vir has come under fire for his comic act. In 2021, Vir released a video in which he spoke about how India has two contrasting sides. He had said that in India, men ‘worship women during the day but gang rape them at night’.
The video did not go down well with the public as Vir faced severe backlash for his comments. A bunch of netizens even accused him of defaming India on an international platform.
Besides being a stand-up comic, Vir has also acted in a bunch of Bollywood films. He featured alongside Shahid Kapoor and Anushka Sharma in Yash Raj Films’ Badmaash Company. He also starred in Aamir Khan’s home production Delhi Belly. He was seen in Saif Ali Khan’s Goa Goa Gone as well.
