Two of the greatest footballers of all time, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, posed for a picture together on Saturday (November 19), which they later shared from their official Instagram accounts, and within minutes it went viral on the internet.
Messi and Ronaldo are both in Qatar these days, where they will represent Argentina and Portugal, respectively, in the FIFA World Cup, which starts today (November 20). And ahead of the start of football’s biggest megaevent, the two top players broke the internet by posing for the picture together.
Both Messi and Ronaldo took to Instagram to share a picture in which they can be seen playing chess. The Argentine and Portuguese captioned the post: “Victory is a State of Mind. A long tradition of crafting trunks photographed by @annieleibovitz for @louisvuitton.”
The picture quickly went viral on Instagram and has already been liked by more than 25 million fans on Ronaldo’s account and around 21 million on Messi’s.
During their playing days in Spain, Ronaldo and Messi had a fierce on-field rivalry when Messi was with Barcelona and Ronaldo was with El Clasico rivals Real Madrid. They both have won numerous individual and team awards and are still forces to be reckoned with.
In his interview earlier this week, Ronaldo opened up about his long-term rivalry with Messi and said that the PSG footballer is a top player and a guy who he really respects.
“Amazing player is magic, top… As a person, we share the stage 16 years, imagine, 16 years. we share. So, I have great relationship with him. I’m not friend of him in terms of, what I mean friend is the guy who was with you in your house, speaking on the phone, no, but it’s like a teammate. He’s a guy that I really respect for the way he always speaks about me. Even his wife or my wife, my girlfriend, they always respect and they’re from Argentina. My girlfriend is from Argentina. So good. What am I going to say about Messi? A great guy who does great things for football.”
