Trump Attends ASEAN Summit in Malaysia; Thailand, Cambodia Sign ‘Peace Deal’ Brokered by US President

US President Donald Trump kicked off his first Asian Tour on Sunday, October 26, 2025. He was given a red-carpet welcome to the 47th ASEAN Summit in Malaysia. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim welcomed him at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. The US President is on a three-nation tour, during which he will visit Japan and South Korea after concluding his Malaysia trip.

Meanwhile, Thailand and Cambodia signed a joint declaration on a peace deal in the presence of the American President and the Malaysian Prime Minister. The agreement dubbed “KL PEACE Accord” was signed by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian PM Hun Manet on the sidelines of the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur. The historic agreement marked a formal step toward ending military conflict and restoring peace along their disputed border.

While speaking at the event, US President Trump said, “This is a momentous day for all of the people of Southeast Asia as we sign a historic agreement to end the military conflict between Cambodia and Thailand.”

He further added, “Earlier this year, an armed clash broke out along the border of these two countries… because of America’s strong commitment to stability and peace in this region… my administration immediately began working to prevent the conflict from escalating.” Meanwhile, drawing attention to economic cooperation, Trump said, “Today, alongside this peace treaty, we are also signing a major trade deal with Cambodia, and a very important critical minerals agreement with Thailand.”

He concluded his speech saying, “On behalf of the United States, I’m proud to help settle this conflict, and forge a future for the region where proud independent nations can prosper, and thrive in safety, security, and peace.” The declaration backs the ceasefire understanding reached in July following talks between Thailand and Cambodia.
