Thrilled that my record of 377 was beaten by a batter I adore: Sanjay Manjrekar praises Prithvi Shaw’s knock

Young Indian opener Prithvi Shaw smashed a record knock in the ongoing Ranji Trophy where he also broke a plethora of records. Shaw, who has been impressive in domestic cricket in the last few years, smashed a 379-run knock on January 11 to break Sanjay Manjrekar’s 32-year-old record. Before Shaw, Manjrekar held the record for the highest individual score by a Mumbai batter in Ranji Trophy with his knock of 377 runs.
But the record was broken by Shaw, who once again reminded the selectors of his capabilities with the willow. Shaw scored 379 runs off 383 balls to enter history books. Soon after his record was broken, Manjrekar took to social media co congratulate Shaw for achieving the milestone.
“Thrilled that my record of 377 was beaten by a batter I adore! Well done Prithvi!” Manjrekar tweeted.
Manjrekar had scored 377 runs against Hyderabad in Ranji Trophy 1990-91. Shaw looked all set to score 400 runs but was dismissed at the score of 379 by Riyan Parag. After scoring 160 runs in the last seven innings, Shaw – who has been in brilliant form in India’s domestic cricket, bounced back to form with the record triple ton.
Shaw finished second in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season with 332 runs under his belt at a strike rate of 181.42 and a top score of 134 against Assam. He scored 217 runs in seven innings in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, but he averages more than 50 in List A cricket.
Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir recently backed Shaw for his good show in domestic cricket.
“Someone like Prithvi Shaw, the kind of start he had to his international career and the kind of talent he has, you back a player on talent. Yes, you have to look at the upbringing as well – where he comes from and the challenges he’s had as well. It makes even more sense for the management and the selectors to keep him around the mix, and help him get on the right track,” Gambhir said while backing the Mumbai opener.
“If he’s willing to put in the hard yards – and I know how destructive he can be; if he can go on to win games for you, whether it’s trainers, management, head coach or chairman of selectors, all these guys should take the onus to try and get these young boys to walk on the right path,” Gambhir was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
