The Game You Never Play Alone: Shraddha Srinath speaks about playing a game developer in the Netflix series

Was it difficult entering the mind and universe of a game developer?

Playing a gaming developer was not a tough role to take on, you know, it’s just a part of her life. The show is much more about politics at the office, gender inequality at work and just misogynistic people online. It’s about mental abuse, things like that, and so playing that was…

A Challenge?

I wouldn’t say it was a challenge, it’s something I enjoy doing, I enjoy sort of exploring the human psyche and understanding how adversity affects a human and the kind of measures they take to come out of it, and Kaavya was that kind of a character. She’s not someone who will take things sitting down. She’s very much a fighter, she’s very much someone who speaks her mind and she’s inquisitive; she can’t stand and be a silent sort of bystander. So yeah, that was the fun part of playing Kaavya, so she’s so much more than a gaming developer, she’s got so much on her plate, so much going on.

How much do you empathise with characters who don’t always follow the righteous path?

I’m a very empathetic person. It is very easy for me to, actually, I sometimes feel like I’m empathetic to a fault, but for me to put myself in someone else’s shoes is my first response to anything, and therefore I feel like I’m very patient, very patient, very forgiving and very, very empathetic.

So was it easy to put yourself in Kavya’s shoes?

To put myself in Kavya’s shoes and to try and understand the kind of harrowing experiences she’s going through, that just became a part of my journey in building the character, understanding Kavya and also understanding why she does what she does. On the other hand, there are certain aspects of Kavya that I aspire to myself. One would even call her reckless. She’s very inquisitive. She needs to take things in control. She does not like the loss of control in her life, things like that. And she’s not someone who wallows in self-pity. She likes to take things in her control, kind of take control of the narrative, things like that. And I really enjoyed that side of life. Personally, I would like to be that kind of Kavya, that kind of person. Also, in continuation to the last answer, no, the character did not take over my life. That has never happened till date.
