Gujarat Titans’ (GT) have made a dream start to their debut season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by winning eight out of their first nine matches in the tournament. The Hardik Pandya-led franchise are sitting on top of the 2022 IPL points’ table and on course to become the first team to qualify for the playoffs of the 15th edition.
While skipper Hardik has led from the front with consistent performances with both and ball, Rahul Tewatia has emerged as one of the most reliable players in the side. The left-handed batter has established himself as one of the best finishers in the league through the course of the current season and helped GT win numerous matches often from impossible situations.
Tewatia’s growth and performances for GT has earned him plaudits from all across the cricket fraternity. One of those to lavish praise on him has been Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar who nicknamed the 28-year-old as the ‘Ice-Man.’ Gavaskar explained it is because of Tewatia’s composure and temperament on the crease that he coined the term.
“That assault on Sheldon Cottrell in Sharjah gave him the belief to do the impossible and the confidence that he belongs here. We saw the impossible (he did with the bat) the other day as well. There’s no twitching or touching the pads (which shows a batter’s nervousness) when he bats in the death overs. He just waits for the ball to be delivered and plays his shots. He’s got all the shots in the book, but most importantly his temperament to stay cool in a crisis is brilliant,” said Gavaskar on Star Sports.
Reason why call him the ice-man is because he just stands there (at the crease) and shows no signs of shrugs or whatever. He’s composed, he’s anticipating the deliveries and knows which shots to play. In his mind, he’s ready that if the ball is (landing) there, he’s going to play his favourite shot. And when he middles (the ball), it’s always a six. That’s what makes him the ice-man because he’s not ruffled at all (with the situation),” he added.
Coming into GT’s clash vs Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Tuesday, Tewatia has scored 179 runs in nine games at an incredible strike-rate of 161.25 with a phenomenal average of 44.25.
