Amidst the economic meltdown and recession fears, the firing of employees have gained momentum and, on average over 1,600 tech employees are being laid off in 2023 in a day globally, including India.
According to the data released from layoffs.fyi which is a layoffs tracking site, a total of 1,024 companies laid off 154,336 workers in 2022.
The mass tech layoffs continued in 2023 too and companies and startups from India are among the leaders in sacking staff.
Here are some company’s layoff records in past two years:
India-based social media company ShareChat (Mohalla Tech Pvt Ltd) fired 20% of its workforce, affecting more than 500 employees due to market uncertainty.
Backed by leading companies like Google, Twitter, Tiger Global and Snapchat, ShareChat at present has around 2,300 employees.
ShareChat laid off less than 5% of its employees in December, 2022 after the company closed its fantasy sports platform called Jeet 11, reported IANS.
Ola, which is one of the world’s largest ride-hailing companies and operating in over 250 cities across India, Australia, New Zealand and the UK, fired its 200 employees this month. Along with this, voice automated startup Skit.ai also dominated by the headlines for laying off its staff.
Another company Dunzo, which delivers groceries and essentials in major Indian cities, also laid off 3% of its workforce as part of its cost-cutting measures, reported IANS.
Most of the tech employees lost their jobs in the beginning of the year 2023. In just 15 days in January, 91 companies have laid off more than 24,000 tech employees which is a signal that worse days are ahead this year.
Around 18,000 employees, including nearly 1,000 staff from India were fired by e-commerce giant Amazon.
At this juncture, LinkedIn is full of users seeking jobs, offers of support for laid off friends and colleagues and suggestions and advice for employees as several companies cut their manpower to pull up from the uncertain macroeconomic environment.
Sensor Tower, a market research firm, data revealed LinkedIn app was downloaded an estimated 58.4 million times in 2022 across the globe from Google Play Store and Apple App Stores which is 10 percent more from 2021, reported IANS.
